Adelaide:- the capital of South Australia, is a
civilised and calm city, that is home to around one million people. It
is divided into two parts, Adelaide and
North Adelaide, separated by Torrens
River. A diverse
range of landscapes surround the city, including green parkland, the Mount Lofty Ranges
and coastal beaches.
Adelaide's city centre has been well
planned and is made up of a grid of streets and various squares. Being
only one mile square makes it extremely accessible. The main street (King William Street)
runs directly from north to south of the city through Victoria Square,
which is at the heart of the city.
Port Adelaide:- hosts
a number of wonderful museums including the South
Australian Maritime Museum,
which features collections on the maritime history, as well as the Australian Museum
of Childhood, National Railway Museum,
South Australian
Aviation Museum
and South
Australian Military Vehicles
Museum.
It's historic
setting creates an atmosphere of previous times, when the early
settlers and sailors walked the streets. The port is still busy, with
cargo and cruise ships, and occasionally sailing ships, entering and
leaving. You should also be able to see two sailing ships that have remained
there, along with 'Yelta' a restored steam tug.
The Yorke Peninsula:- is the first peninsula west
of Adelaide and hosts a number of pretty beaches.
At the southern point of the peninsula is the beautiful Innes National Park which offers good diving,
fishing and surfing as well as some great walking trails.
Unlike the western
coast road, the eastern coast road runs only about 2km from the coastline.
There are some pretty little coves and beaches along the road where you
can turn off to explore. The two main towns along the east coast are
Ardossan to the north and Yorketown to the south. Ardossan is a good
tourist town with an interesting museum about the area, while Yorketown
is the main business district in the area.
