Darwin:- Unlike the barren and dusty
land of Northern
Territory, Darwin
is a modern and lively city. Darwin
is a cosmopolitan city and the perfect place to relax before travelling
on.
The
city was founded in 1869, and although development had previously been
slow, it rapidly grew from 1871 on the discovery of gold at Pine Creek.
However, development slowed again due to extreme climate and cyclones.
It also had poor contact with the other cities around Australia, until the road to Alice Springs was surfaced.
Katherine:- is one of two large towns you will come across on the route
between Darwin and Alice.
The main attraction to the area (other than the fact it has constant
running water) is the spectacular Katherine Gorge. Giles Street is the road you need
for Katherine Gorge, although nearby is also the turning for the Kimberley and Western Australia,
along the Victoria Highway
Victoria River:- Crossing and the Victoria River Inn, this tiny settlement is
located on the Victoria Highway 194 kilometres west of Katherine.
The settlement itself is little more than a roadhouse and campground,
but the scenery along the highway as it winds past immense escarpments
split by the might Victoria
River ranks as
some of the most stunning in the Territory. The area's colourful
scenery features grassy plains, boab trees and majestic gorges carved
out of sandstone escarpments.
