Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 small islands in the Arabian Gulf midway between the Qatar peninsula and Saudi Arabia. Bahrain is connected to Saudi Arabia by 23-km causeway, which opened in November 1986. The islands are flat and sandy, with a few low hills. The climate is hot and humid during the summer, mild and pleasant in the winter. The largely urban population is about 63% Bahraini; the balance of the people consist of other Arabs and Iranians, Indians, and other Asians. Bahrain has two universities. U.S. navy's 5th Fleet, which patrols the Persian Gulf, is based in Bahrain. There is some fishing, and dates, fruits, and vegetables are grown, but the majority of Bahrain's food is imported. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden. Bahrain remained an important trading and commercial center throughout ensuing millenia, visited and at times occupied by Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Portuguese, and British.
